5 Underrated Rap & R’n’B Artists of the 2010’s

Anyone who knows me personally will be more than aware of my endless love and appreciation for all things musical. Whether it’s the bubblegum pop of One Direction, the ever-so-explicit raps of Tyler the Creator, the funky fire of James Brown or even the deep and bassy drops of Diplo; music is something that defines and lets me express myself in the form of sound.

Growing up, my dad was without a doubt my biggest influence on music and contributed to my love (and not to mention education) on all things funk, hip-hop, rap, soul and house-related. Being a man of all genres, my dad showed me how to look deeper into songs and passed on his respect for music to me.

Me, probably listening to some sick beats back in the day

Even though I appreciate all genres, I won’t hesitate to admit that some stand out more than others. Rap, Hip-Hop and R’n’B have always hit a soft spot for me and grabbed my attention the quickest. You can usually find me searching through the iTunes charts under those particular genres and forever scrolling through the ‘recommended for you’ and ‘listeners also bought’ categories on iTunes and Youtube. Not only this, but reading music reviews, scrolling Ticketek and checking out what my friends are listening to help me further expand my music library.

As my first official music post on my blog, I have decided to write about my favourite underrated Rap and R’n’B artists to give my readers a further insight of my musical taste and possibly provide some new tunes to jam to!

(P.S – A SPOTIFY PLAYLIST WITH MY FAVOURITE SONGS FROM THE LISTED ARTISTS WILL BE AT THE END OF THE ARTICLE! MAKE SURE TO GIVE IT A LISTEN!)

billboard-music-award-2016-noms-billbaord-650

Being someone who eagerly awaits the Billboard Music Awards each year and OBVIOUSLY fits into the criteria of a professional fashionista, it is with great excitement that I write this blog post. I have carefully chosen out my favourite hits and misses in the 2016 Red Carpet Fashion scene and hope that my opinions are somewhat universal. So without further a due, here are my uneducated thoughts on the Billboard Music Awards Fashion for 2016.

Sammi

“Hang on, we got food”

I met the beautiful Sammi about two years ago after we got introduced online by my childhood best friend and her school friend, Georgia. One day in the winter holidays, being the boring teenagers we are, we both decided to finally meet up in person and go see a movie. We bonded instantly at our first hello and collectively spoke to each other as if we had been friends for a lifetime.

I had the absolute pleasure of getting to know Callum (or better known as Cj) after we both ran for leadership positions at school this year. After getting talking about all things McDonalds, high school and people related, it only was a few days later that his work colleagues made me aware of a little crush he had developed.

FAQ

About

Hi there!

My name is Julia and I’m a 19-year-old girl currently living on the Gold Coast, Australia.

I’ve always aspired write my own blog one day but never had the self-confidence or time to really think of it as more than a dream.

One night after stalking my friend Emily’s blog for the millionth time and falling in love with her writing yet again, I decided to give it a try myself. From her interviews with friends to celebrity fashion reviews, Ivy Cornelia reminded me of the importance of writing and therefore pushed me to make Half Girl, Half Asleep. Just from initially reading her words, I already felt as though we were that bit closer and that is exactly what I would love to achieve with my blog!

I’m a full-time University student, weekly breakfast and drive-home radio announcer, event/live music photographer and lover of all things writing. I’m passionate about the events/music/nightlife/festival scene and hope to pursue my dreams of working with like-minded people in the field after I graduate Uni.

My blog will reflect topics and issues that I am personally passionate about. I have dealt with numerous mental health issues for nearly half of my life and have been recently diagnosed with a chronic autoimmune disease and have found that writing has deemed very therapeutic for me. I’m also very interested in general pop culture, music and the thoughts/opinions of those who have walked a different life path than I have. They will be reflected in my series 100+ Coffees.

Half Girl, Half Asleep will be my way of sharing my passions, opinions, thoughts and concerns  through the astonishing power of words.
